7 Common Myths to Dispel about – Starting an Online Business
Once upon a time there was a privileged gentleman who went to Harvard Business School and learned all the insider trading secrets necessary to make his online start-up succeed. Everything he touched turned to sheer gold based on the quality of instruction he received and the detailed business plan upon which the tech geeks walked him through step-by-step. He possessed all the tools of the trade to make a lucrative enterprise and lived happily and wealthily ever after.
And then he woke up and realised it was all a dream!
The truth is, limiting yourself based on old-fashioned/traditional beliefs that are out of touch with reality only hinders your online business potential. Anyone-- and I do mean anyone-- can start a business online from scratch. Let me repeat that one more time for the people in the back-- anyone and everyone can start an online business! Does it take hard work and perseverance? Absolutely. Will you be forced to challenge yourself and run on a little less sleep? Definitely.
BUT, if you have the drive, the passion, and the work ethic, it can be done. Let's go ahead and dispel some common myths about starting an online business.
7 Myths That Must Be Dispelled Before Launching an Online Business.
Myth #1: I am too Young or too Old
Age ain't nothing but a number, as the old adage goes. Do not allow yourself to be constricted by your two decades of life experience or your centennial wisdom. Did you know that the average age for founders in a new startup is 41.9 years (DigiMax)? Too often people assume that an individual starting their online business is a fresh-faced college graduate. Sure, there's plenty of room for the younger set. But there's also more than enough space for those slowly approaching retirement status. Fantastic ideas are not limited to the year on your birth certificate.
Myth #2: I Need to Know all the Intricacies of Starting a Business
That's the beauty of creating your own business-- you'll learn as you go. The best experience you'll glean comes from 'on the job' training. Google is your new best friend! Search for tips and instructional articles. It's amazing how many people are willing to share their steps to success. If you haven't already joined LinkedIn, do so immediately. LinkedIn is a social media platform designed for professionals. Also look to Facebook groups to see if there are any that cater to your line of work.
Finally-- network, network, network! Tell everyone that you've got a plan in the works. The server at your lunch spot may have a parent who is at the top of their industry. Make connections. Solidify references and find people with whom to brainstorm. Try to find a mentor who has already been there, who can help you navigate the process. It's all about who you know, and a mentor, online or otherwise can take you under their wing while teaching you invaluable lessons.
Myth #3: Don't I need a Business Degree or University Education?
While a business course may be helpful, it certainly isn't imperative. What's most important is experience in your industry. Take the experience of one of my old school friends for instance - Despite his brilliance, he hated school. Personally, I think he was so far beyond the other students and the curriculum he wasn't stimulated enough. Simply put, he was bored. School was just wasted time that kept him from his true love- tinkering with computers.
Based on his grades and intellectual capabilities, he could have gone to any of the top league institutions of his choice. Yet he felt that school would not serve him, so he threw himself into tinkering with computers. He asked a local IT firm for the chance to do an unpaid internship to show his skills [despite not meeting the educational requirements for the position] and within a week he was hired.
The moral of this story: people care about results. They want to see what you can accomplish and bring to the table, not the pieces of paper attached to your name.
According to (Medal) Our education system is broken. Colleges leave graduates with mountains of debt that they can spend decades paying off. There is another way. Trade schools, certifications, or even community colleges can reduce your debt significantly if formal schooling is your chosen path.
With that being said, educational courses can be extremely helpful. Consider taking a class at a local community college or getting a certification that could give you a leg up among the competition. Thanks to the wonderful world wide web, there are great online educational courses, even college classes that can be taken for free, such as edX or Udemy. There is a small fee if you want a certificate of completion, but keep records of all courses you take for professional development, whether you get certified or not.
Myth #4: I Need Lots of Sales Experience in order to Thrive.
Take it from many people who worked for many years in the cruel, soul-destroying world of media advertising sales-- this is a total myth! Too often people conjure up the image of some slick car salesman who is wheeling and dealing to hit those quotas. True, there are some people who can sell ice to an Eskimo! But you don't have to be Don Draper to sell yourself!
Absolutely take advice from people who have more experience than you and be open to suggestion. But if something feels phony or ingenuine-- people will notice! If you're not comfortable with your approach or feeling less than confident, it shows! Practice makes perfect.
Passion sells! Enthusiasm sells! Good ideas sell!
There is not a single business person alive who excels in every single facet remotely pertaining to business. A person may be a maths whiz but lack visual creativity. Or perhaps they write brilliant pitches-- just don't ever ask them to present the pitch to a room full of people!
As cliche as it sounds, be a product of the product!
In an ideal world, your product would be so valuable that it would sell itself while you sleep. But that's usually not how it works right out the gate. If you're selling beaded bracelets, don't you dare leave the house without an arm full of them! Enlist your friends and family to wear them as well. Make sure they are prominently displayed in your social media photos.
Furthermore, advertising can cost money - especially paid advertising - that you might not have in your budget [Yet!]. This is why it's imperative to really find your niche. Continuing with the beaded bracelet example, it may be a smart investment to run any ads targeting Ladies Fashion.
Myth #5: There will be a Huge Startup Cost and Initial Investment
I often hear that you have to spend money to make money. This Is Not True! Take for example the person that starts a YouTube channel. There are zero start-up costs, just answering a few questions and linking the email to create an account. Voila! There’s the online business underway!
It may not start out as a primary source of income and can be considered as an additional source of income to begin with. It takes time to grow, and one must work hard and consistently deliver quality content. Yet there are absolutely zero startup costs. For the first set of videos, I’ve known people to literally plop down on the floor in their living room, prop the phone against a vase on the coffee table or something, and chatted away. If you are convinced that the story you want to share or a product you want to talk about is interesting enough that telling it alone would attract viewers – go ahead! You don’t need to invest in fancy equipment or a studio if you truly believe in your product.
As you begin to gain traction, you will automatically begin to invest in yourself. Of course, this is optional, but that could be purchasing a ring light, microphone, backdrop, and editing software to make any such videos the absolute best they could be because you know that's what your audience deserves. A special treat or a splurge is okay, even awesome if you can afford to do so-- but investing in making the business better and credible is extremely important.
Truth be told, all you need to start a business is a smart phone or a computer.
These magical devices allow you to correspond with people, make photos of your goods, build websites, and even handle financial transactions. Use what you have before you start making purchases-- and when additional needs arise, prioritize them.
Finally, consider some of the following opportunities if you need some zero-cost inspiration which can potentially be built up around affiliate marketing, blogging, YouTube videos.
What's something that people always compliment you on?
A friend of a friend was always getting compliments on her wardrobe. She was also in the process of moving to a smaller apartment, so she needed to downsize her wardrobe. Selling her extra stuff online put money in her pocket while freeing up space in her apartment-- talk about killing two birds with one stone. Also, because of her strong stylistic/fashionista skills, she started a personal styling business on the side e.g Giving tips on YouTube and Instagram. She didn't have to use any space for inventory or have any up-front costs because she was essentially going with customers to act as their stylist upon request. She'd make the recommendations and people would purchase their own clothes.
Another friend of a friend loves animals but has no veterinary training. She volunteered at her local centre and began walking dogs on the side. Eventually this evolved into an entire pet sitting operation which she began to share on YouTube and she was eventually able to quit the job that she hated.
I think you can see where I am going with this. These are only a few of many, many examples.
Myth #6: This Can't Be Done Without Being Tech Savvy and Having Knowledge of Web Design – Surely Not!
Depending on your budget, you can hire somebody to handle all that graphic stuff or outsource such work if it’s not your thing. Yet let's assume you're not quite at the point where you can be hiring employees to cater to your every need. Therefore, you have two options: find somebody who will do it for free or do it yourself, Period! Regarding the first option, look for a person who is just getting started in the field. Present the web/graphic design/IT portion of your business as an opportunity to hone their skills and build their portfolio.
Or go the DIY option! Plenty of people use sites like WordPress for business. It's a totally free hosting platform. While designed for blogs, it's user-friendly and doesn't require coding. If you need inspiration or instruction, there is literally a video for everything on YouTube including great tutorials on WordPress.
Myth #7: People Won't Take Me Seriously and I'll Inevitably Fail!
At the risk of sounding like an overzealous motivational speaker, there is no such thing as failure if you don't Quit!! Frame something that isn't a soaring success as a learning opportunity, not a catastrophe. When one door closes, another door opens. You will make mistakes. It's what you do with those mistakes that counts. Fall seven times, stand up eight!
As for people not taking you seriously, don't let their opinions affect you as you're planting the seeds for your business. Don't get me wrong-- you want to have a good reputation and solid character. However, don't be afraid to really take a leap and go out on a limb. Some people may think you won't get very far-- but YOU will be laughing all the way to the bank.
Surround yourself with supportive people who encourage you and your business. As I said earlier, you don't want a posse of 'yes men,' but you do want people who want you to succeed and have a growth-oriented mindset.
Look for others in the same boat as you/a community of like-minded people, when it comes to starting your own business. Whether or not they are in the same industry, you can bounce ideas off of each other and share wisdom.
Now that we've Freed Ourselves From the above Cobwebs of Myths, let's get down to Business.
There is absolutely no excuse as to why you shouldn't be utilizing your talents/strengths while being your own boss in a Digital Economy in which we live in today. If you encounter an obstacle, find a way to smash through it. It's all about getting started and taking imperfect action.
Going back to the YouTube example for a moment - YouTube isn't for everybody, but there is truly a place for everyone in the business world.
Aside from YouTube, Blogging is also another great medium/platform being used by thousands of people all over the world which enables them to make money online from affiliate links, affiliate programs, advertisers, and sponsorships. This takes time and dedication-- it certainly will not happen overnight-- but it can definitely reward you with a very profitable online business.
I truly believe that everyone has a talent, something about themselves which they can sell. If you don't already know what that is, start exploring. Global pandemic notwithstanding, the way we do business is changing. People/Businesses are moving out of work cubicles and into the world-- or their homes. It is absolutely crucial to be able to adapt to whatever life throws your way. Offer a product or a service that is constantly desired or a problem that needs solving and you'll constantly be in business.
If I Could Leave You with any Parting Advice, It Would be This: STOP HESITATING! Just Do It! What Have You Got to Lose!
Let go of the wall of the shallow end of the pool and swim mightily towards the deep end! You're not reading this blog just to kill time-- you have the desire to start an online business and the title caught your eye. So get started! Don't feel as though you are limited to a single venture. Explore multiple options on a smaller scale as opposed to one huge, all-consuming business that leaves you with nothing but overwhelm.
I can count the number of people I know on one hand who have just one job. Multiple sources of income can equal a business. If something doesn't work out as you'd hoped, adjust your sails and change course. Use the tools already at your disposal to create your launch.
Don't get lost in the shuffle. Now is the time to do something different. Whether you're wanting an additional source of passive income, side hustle or a total career change, there has never been a better time to launch your Online Business. With the internet, the world is literally at your fingertips. Research, Study, Explore. Thanks to your ‘Google PhD’., it's possible to be entirely self-taught these days!
